Lost Camera Boy

I started my own Tumblr page about 2 months ago and during that time I came across this really funny and cute post by blogger Andrew McDonald, titled “A PICTORIAL GUIDE TO AVOIDING CAMERA LOSS”. While I don’t know if the guy ever found his camera, he became pretty popular in the web, known as “Lost Camera Boy”. And since I found him to be very cute, I decided to draw him with his camera (that he either got back or got brand new from some one who took pity on him) :)

I’ve put them up in the Galleries (In the Sketchbook and Manga Portraits sections).

I’m thinking if I should email these to Andrew himself…what do you think? It’s not a real camera, but its pretty cool still, right?

Gasp! More new art?! Of Astrophysicists and Film Directors

Yes, you “heard” me right! I’m posting NEW art, in less than a month! I can’t believe it myself. I’m really busy recently with many things, such as the asbestos manga project, classes, zemis, plus my 2 arubaitos (part-time jobs), and YET I’m making some new artwork. I think this is proof that art flourishes in times of hardship, and perhaps it is difficulties which bring about more inspiration (although this could just be an espcape mechanism, but whatever, it gets the job done!)

For my “Tomodachi Manga Portraits”(I gave it a name finally!) Project I had mentioned earlier that I would start to draw my guy friends, since I had concentrated a lot on the girls. So to start it off, here’s the portrait of my good friend Alex, from the UK. I already showed it to him and he was quite pleased with it (thankfully!). Alex is an Astrophysicist doing his PhD at Kyoto University (I seem to have a handful of friends in that school), and is currently studying Supernovae, Stars and hopes to someday make contact with extraterrestrial life.

In regards to the style, I’ve been really inspired by an anime I started watching not long ago called Hetalia. Besides being ROLF kind of funny (it really is hilarious, please check it out!!!), I absolutely LOVE the drawing style! It’s so simple yet so interesting! The artist, Hidekazu Himaruya frequently posts artwork of the characters in his blog, and he draws digitally like me. So by looking at his artwork I’m inspired in regards to style and color and I wanted to try out some of his techniques. So I used Alex’s portrait to try them out. It’s nowhere as good as Himayura-san’s work, but I hope to reach that level someday…

My second drawing is of another friend, Vesi, from Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have already made a portrait of her, but I made this doodle in my sketchbook (while I should have been paying attention to class, nonetheless), and I wanted to try out more of the digital screentoning I have been doing with my own manga. I made this in particular because she is a Film Director (yes a real one!!), and she is currently shooting a movie here in Japan for her Graduation Project, so to make sure the crew knows who’s the boss I gave her this shirt :)

Please click on the drawings to see them bigger, and please leave a comment, I really want to know your opinions/feelings/thoughts/ etc. Enjoy!

Melinda Melinda

Yet another manga portrait! This time, of my friend Melinda, from Colombia! Although she lives there now, we had great times when she was here in Japan doing her PhD in Kyoto University. She is a specialist in Waste Management, a great humanitarian and is working hard to save the world!

When I was finishing this drawing, I realized that I made her look a whole lot like Tajel, one of the characters from phdcomics. Interestingly, Tajel and Melinda are both passionate about the environment and love to participate in social causes. Coincidence? :p

ST

Another Friend Portrait: this time, Estie. She’s a good friend who lives in Gifu, in the countryside and even has her own column in a local newspaper! She has a signature pose that she does every time she has her picture taken, so I decided to use it for the portrait (it’s kind of like a photo, and she would have done this pose for the drawing anyways! haha).

I hope everyone likes it. Cheers~ :)

Another portrait

I start the new year with new art! This time, I made a color sketch of another friend of mine, Vesi. Hopefully she doesn’t mind much me drawing the cigarette although she’s trying to quit! :)

Like I mentioned before, this is a color sketch. I made previous friend’s manga portraits using pen and inkn, but since I’m trying to get more familiar with digital coloring, I thought it would be a good idea to experiment on the portraits themselves. They’re short and small and make for good exercises.

I hope people like it, and I will definitely be posting more of my friends soon! Cheers!~

New Illustration!

I managed to finish this in time for the Graduate School of Art 1st year Student’s Exhibit, starting Jan. 13th (here’s more info on that, but unfortunately is only in Japanese). It’s really the first (and only) big illustration I’ve done all year. I hope next year (and next decade) brings me an easier and more relaxed time in regards to my work. I’ve been struggling a lot with it in the past couple of years and I could really use a break. Hope it works out.

But in regards to this illustration, it’s part of my project to make my own Tarot cards. This is #2, “The High Priestess”. Here’s a bit of information on her I found here:

The High Priestess or Papess (La Papess)
The Priestess of the Silver Star

Card Number: 2
Key Number: 13
Rulership: The Moon
Hebrew Letter: Gimel
Translation: camel
Numerical Value: 9

Divinatory meaning

  • Upright – Intuition, wisdom and secret knowledge, the feminine side of the male personality.  Something remains yet to be revealed, but patience must be observed. Duality and mystery.  Hidden influences affect both home and work and intuitive insight suggests new solutions.  The influence of women.
  • Ill Dignified or Reversed – Lack of personal harmony and problems resulting from a lack of foresight.  Suppression of the feminine or intuitive side of the personality.  Facile and surface knowledge.  repression and ignorance of true facts and feelings.  In women, an inability to come to terms with other women or themselves.  Things and circumstances are not what they seem.

Let me know what you think about it~  Cheers and have a Merry Xmas everyone! :)

Lee Lee Lee, Ai Ling Leeeeee~

ailing01_web

Like the first lines of the Tenacious D song, “Lee” say:

“Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee,
Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee Lee,
We’re talkin’ fuckin’ Lee!”

Hahaha, I just had to put that there :p On the same note of drawing mini portraits of people I know, this time I drew my friend Lee Ai Ling. She is also from Malaysia, and is an AMAZING photographer (hence the camera in her hand). Seriously, she’s great, her pictures should be on National Geographic. But she’s also a great friend and has a great sense of style, specially for bags :) Thanks for being so cool, Ai Ling! :D

Chenski!

Made a profile drawing of my friend Chen. She’s a very nice, fun, awesome girl from Malaysia and it’s always fun to hang out with her because she’s totally crazy (haha, in a good way!) . Just a little homage to my good friend who always lets me stay in her cozy apartment whenever I’m in Tokyo. Thanks again Chenski! Love and hugs to you~
