I.F – “Pattern”

IF_Pattern_web

Yes! I made another illustration for Illustration Friday, just in time! I’m surprised (happily) at myself! I’ve been pretty good with deadlines lately, and I hope the trend continues. But it’s not just a trend, I’ve actually had to work extra hard to stay in the game. But it’s paying off. What makes work meaningful is the relationship between work and reward. If you can see the fruits of your labor, its all worth it.

On that note, this was my idea for “Pattern”. I don’t know if you can see it, but I inserted binary code into the branches and leaves. I was playing with the idea that DNA is essentially code, and someday in the future we’ll be able to “program” and “write” plants and animals, and perhaps humans, as easily as we write a computer program. I don’t think this is a fantasy: I think there are many people out there who are willing to make it a reality. Whether or not that is a good idea, we’ve yet to see, but I have no doubt it will happen, or at least, there will attempts at it.

So, basically, there are patterns in all lifeforms, even computers :)

(This was made with watercolors and colored pencils on watercolor paper, about A4 size).

IL – “Infinite”

IL_Infinite

After a long hiatus due to my summer break, I’m back with an entry for Illustration Friday’s topic of the week, “Infinite”. I actually made this years ago, but I felt it fit for the topic. I wish I remembered how I made it ( I was experimenting with Photoshop’s brushes, trying to make original textures), and I came up with this. I love it because it makes me think of outer space, and I LOVE outer space. I’m fascinated by what could be out there, and the thought of the universe being infinite…How can anything be infinite? Things can be big, huge, but limitless? It’s such an abstract idea that it’s nearly impossible to imagine. Only one thing rings true when I think about infinity and, as cheesy as it may sound, it’s love. Of the things I know that exist in nature, love is the only thing I can conceive being limitless. Everything else has a beginning and an end, but love, like the universe, has no boundaries.

I hope I can keep up with IF this semester, I always make the resolution to do it weekly, but always fail. Maybe that’s the constant: to change the routine all the time. In the end, the only thing that does not change, is that there is always change.

IF – “Worn”

IF_Worn

Finally, after a long time without posting any art, here’s an entry for this week’s Illustration Friday’s topic, “Worn”. They’re my pair of purple converse sneakers, that I’ve had for more than 5 years now. At first, I didn’t know what to draw/paint about this topic, but when I looked at them I realized I’ve had them for so long now, and that they’ve walked with me to many interesting places and through many experiences. Not just that, but they were what I bought with my very first paycheck from working as a professional illustrator. They’re clearly a “worn” testament of my path of life. So In honor of that, I decided to give my hand a try in watercolors, a medium I haven’t used in years, to try and capture all the time invested walking in my humble, worn-out, red-laced purple converse sneakers.

On a side note, It was incredibly liberating to spend most of yesterday sketching and painting (and with the pouring rain, even more enjoyable so). I hadn’t done that in literally years. It was curious that as I painted my worn-out sneakers, as I myself felt worn out by the years of my long hiatus from art. But I feel like it’s all finally coming back. I hope it sticks a while longer with me this time…

IF – Talisman

IF_Talisman

Sakura (cherry blossoms) are in bloom right now, so that kind of took over the theme of the drawing, but I kind of like the way it turned out. A talisman is a charm, and charms make me think of gems, but I’ve always thought of a personal charm, such as a talisman, to be something that draws energy from and is “embedded” in nature, so I wanted to depict that by entangling a polished, crafted gem into the wilderness of trees, and of wildly twisting branches.

IF – “Climbing”

Climbing

I’ve been subscribed to Illustration Friday for quite some time now, but I’ve never posted anything for their weekly “challenges”. But as part of my new year’s resolution to get my artist butt in gear, I’ll be posting a drawing for each of them this year (or at least make an honest effort to do so). So this week’s topic is “Climbing”.

I actually made this drawing about a year ago, as part of one of those stories I’m still in the process of finishing :p But the title fit, and so does the occasion so, here it is, enjoy :)

I’m also going to try some other artists challenges such as a drawing a day, some photoraphy…we’ll see. What’s for sure though is a revamp of the layout of this site. Something different to start out the Year of the Ox.

So Happy New Year of the Ox to everyone!
